  1. There are many aspects to consider. One issue is that of the physical environment in relation to the abilities and needs of the children.  The licensing regulations in relation to staff ratios, sq footage inside and out, accessibility issues by the public.  I think that the physical environment can be dealt with from a resourced common sense approach along with your local licensing.  What I see time and again to be bigger dangers in regards to safety are the issues of drop off and pick up.  Many times a parent cant make it to school to pick up the child so they send another friend or relative.  Please be strict with the policies of signing the child in and signing the child out.  My first center would never release a child unless (in writing) this person was on file as a designated person.  We had a incident of a scorned boy friend actually attempt to kidnap a child.  Please use NAEYC as a incredible resource for your safety issues.  I am happy that you are concerned with this issue because believe it or not it is often not considered until something goes wrong!!

  2. well my suggestion is go to the school district where you live . and they will tell you where is a safe pre school

    hope that help

  3. Buy All About the ECERS-R from Kaplanco.com

This is the assessment our county uses. It addresses all areas of the pre-school environment, and this book has lots of photos of good and bad examples.

  4. There are lists from your job and family services - anticipate everything - get down on the children's level and crawl around seeing what they could get into or what could fall onto them.  Bolt cabinets and shelves to the walls.

  5. A key factor is observation.  How well are you observing the children you are teaching?  Many times, teachers become the center of attention rather than sitting back and observing the child in his work space.  How does the child interact with others?  Are you addressing situations as they come up and providing guidence to help children solve their problems?

Attention to detail is also important.  What we want to do is refine those movements that a child is doing.  When a child rolls up a rug after a work, are they doing it carefully?  Are the sides matched up well?  These attention to details are what children this age crave.  They spent the last 3 years of their life learning and figuring out a sense of order.  This age is the time where they refine that order.  Provide them with that and they will be much more peaceful.

Following specific classroom made rules.  If a child is sitting on a floor during a presentation and you need to walk past, show them how you do it.  Say "excuse me, _______."  That person then stands up and steps to the side.  Say "thank you" to let them know they may sit down.

    Provide activities that build focus.
