How to pull a prop shaft?

1 1/4" shaft, need to remove from coupler ( still in boat) whats the easy way, or THE way ?

  1. First put an alignment mark on the coupler.  Then split the coupler, move the shaft back about 6", and using a brass drift, tap the coupler off the shaft.  You may have to use heat, watch for fire hazards.  remove the packing nut from the stuffing box, and pull out the shaft


  2. Remove the bolts at the coupler, make sure if there is a set s***w in the coupling remove that, if the coupling is cross drilled with a pin in it you have to remove that. Then you can take a socket and insert it between the coupling halves, and tighten up a couple of bolts in the coupling. This will pull the coupling together but force the shaft out. you can get longer sockets or pieces of steel stock to put inbetween as the shaft moves further out. In a typical boat there is not much room to swing a hammer and hit a drift pin. And heat is good but also dangerous in the bilge.

  3. If its an outboard remove prop there should be 2 bolts in the bearing carrier remove bolts my need tool to remove carrier,remove gear removenut on drive shaft pull drive shaft up and out then u should be able to pull the prop shaft out.
