I'm wanting to buy a categorized write off (uk C or D) repair her and put her back on the road.

what i need to know is what documents/tests/criteria must i obtain before the car is road legal?

-supposedly MOT is not good enough, i know that you can personally declare a vehicle a write off, but how do you 'undiclare'

  1. I did so some years ago. My insurance company said that hey would  re-insure  the car if I had an independent engineers  report saying it was roadworthy. i can not now remember if they nominated the engineer or I did.

My daughter actually wrote it off by hitting out gatepost and we were very lucky nobody was hurt. The next year my wife wrote it off again along with a neighbours car when a man who lived nearby pulled out of a junction without seeing her.

I would not do it again

  2. i have brought my car 2nd hand and you have to get your MOT done then you send your car in for a VIC test which costs about £35 you have to send a form off first you are aloowed to drive it there when the car has passed the VIC check you are able to go and get the tax done as i havent passed my test yet i havent done it but i know people who have who say that the process is quite eaase

  3. As other answers have said if the car is a Cat C write off or above then it will (more than likely) require a VIC (cat D's do not require them). When you find a car you like, take note of the reg and give VOSA a call on 0870 60 60 440 and they will tell you whether it does need a VIC and they can arrange a booking for you. The fee is currently £38.

Obviously if the car has no MOT then a new one will need to be carried out asap but if there is still a current MOT on the car then it is still valid and the law does not require you to have a new one until that one runs out.

  4. cat c needs vic and mot.

    cat d only needs mot.
