  1. Some of it depends on your climate. If in cold climate, dig about 10 inches down. Make sure to extend an additional 6 inches around each side to give you room to add your border. You want to put in 6" of aggregate. Be sure to do about 2-3 inches at a time and compact in those layers. THIS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT! Next add 2" of sand. NOT PLAY SAND! Screed to level and lay your brick. Work in 4 foot x 4 foot area laying the brick. Lightly tap the brick with a rubber mallet. After the brick is laid, pour and sweep sand in to joints. Compact again to set brick and vibrate  sand into joints. If necessary, repeat. Make sure the patio is swept clean and lightly wet the patio. This sets the sand. Now be sure the last thing you do is the border. This will keep everything in place. ENJOY!

  2. You need to dig down as far as needed to make the height of patio to be where you want it to come.

4-6' of coarse gravel tamp with half of needed down then put down the rest and tamp again

1-2" of sand then smooth or screed to level and slope away from house so water will drain.

Paver bricks 2' thick or 4" thick.  Lay in gently so as not to disturb sand.  Then sweep sand over top to fill joints.  You pick the pattern you want.

We are looking at a total of about 9" deep.  So now you know how deep you need to dig to reach the desired height.

  3. dig out the area that you want your patio ...put down about an inch or 2 of sand, and make sure it is very level.  Space the patio blocks where you want them ....then cover them with more sand, and sweep the sand back and forth across them forcing it into the cracks between the blocks ......easy as pie !
