How to put in window screen in old window?

It has the storm window in now and I can't figure out where the screen goes..do I take out the storm window and use that track?

The windows are really old...single pane/wood casing with a metal lock at the top and a screwed on metal bracket to lift/lower the window.

Any advice?

  1. If it only has one track, then it was made to remove the storm window and put in the screen.  If it has two or three, use the correct track, and just put it in. Double sash storms has 3 tracks, one for each sash and one for the screen. You must leave the storms in when you put in the screen, otherwise there will be a gap at the top.

  2. I assume you have aluminum storm windows.

Two types, replace storm  window with screen or slide window up and slide screen down.

Round up your Dad, Grandad, landlord or someone who knows about these things and have them help you.

  3. Storm windows for the last forty years or so have been three track. One track for each of the upper and lower storm windows and one for the screen. The screen usually goes in the inner-most track.

So, raise the lower storm sash all the way up and leave it there until the weather gets cool again and it's time to lower it.

If the screen is out, lay the top of the screen flat and then skew it slightly so that the tabs at the top can engage the track. Then, slide the screen up the track while tipping it into place, and then withdraw the two latches at the bottom so that they can engage the track and you're done!
