  1. that sounds like a disaster waiting to happen, take it from me, in high school i had my friend cut my hair for me, she told me she knew how since her dad was a hairdresser, anyway, it turned out into a catastrophe! please do not do it!

  2. ok, a quick way to do this at home and get good results is to put your hair into a high ponytail in the middle of the top of your head, and then cut the ponytail straight across. BEFORE this, make sure you shampoo your hair thoroughly. If you have thick hair, condition it, as well. Rinse well and either partially towel dry or leave your hair wet to cut it. Brush or comb your hair with a large tooth comb before attempting to layer it. Remove all tangles. It is a good idea to buy professional haircutting scissors for best results. Dull scissors can lead to uneven layers and split ends. Although this does work, i still recommend you go to the salon. It's an easier way to achieve the look you're after and you don't have to worry about wrecking your hair as much. Hope that helped =)

    "brushing" the ends or up to the point you want the layer to be at and it worked really well!

    have a go!

  5. Things You’ll Need:

        * Sharp scissors

        * Comb

        * Hair clips

        * Guts

    1- Follow the pattern of the last cut you got from the salon to trim your hair and give it the bouncy look you get from a fresh cut.

    2-  Clip up the top layers of your hair with hair clips all the way around your head, leaving one layer. Cut it first, then release a layer at a time and just follow the same lines that are already there. Re-clip the extra hair on top of your head.

    3-  Cut into your hair once you are finished with the even layers. Zigzag the scissor all over your head to give it a more natural look. Just hold the scissors sideways and cut v-shaped angles all over your head.

    4- Pull your hair back into a ponytail. Make the knot near the top of your head. Cut off a couple inches of the ponytail and release it from the holder. Shake it loose and you have a newly created layered look. You can touch it up with more cuts as described in step three.

    5-  Draw an imaginary line across your bangs and cut straight across. Then go back and make v-cuts with the scissors at various intervals. Unless you have a very symmetrical style, which layering is not conducive to, you should make the v-cuts random to give you a really natural look.

  6. Cutting hair by yourself is always dangerous (you have no one else but yourself to blame and it sucks being mad at yourself), and HARD! But, the pony tail idea is excellent.

    My twist on it: Tip upside down and pony tail on top of your head. Get a pencil that isn't sharpened and push the unsharpened end into the center of your ponytail. Use this as a "mast" for sliding the elastic up. Once you get the exact height, remove the pencil and tighten the elastic if needed.

    For SHORT layers pull the elastic four inches away from your head and then cut everything that is dangling out of the ponytail.

    For MEDIUM layers, pull the elastic seven inches away from your head and cut.

    For LONG layers, pull the elastic nine inches away from your head or at minimum leave three inches of hair sticking off the end of the ponytail to cut.

    I'd also suggest even getting a friend to help you do this because it is always way easier to have an extra set of eyes (if not hands) to see on the top of your head for you. But make sure this person is not a FOOL.... heehee.

    This type of hair style is called Vertical Layering.
