  1. Well your answer is going to depend on what type of plant your are trying to grow. There are many different types of fertilizers out there on the market, and not all are for use on all plants.  Your best bet is to do a little research on the particular type of plant to see what its needs are. Then look at the fertilizer packages.  Aside from micro nutrients fertilizers contain 3 major elements and they will always be listed as 3 numbers in this order. (N) nitrogen (P) Phosphorous(K) Potassium or potash.

N usually encourages top growth of the plant. P pushes flowers and roots and K will help repair roots and promote new root growth.

When in doubt as to which type of fertilizer to use,  go with a lighter well balanced one such as 10-10-10.  If you are trying to start a lawn, then something along the lines of an 18-24-12 would be good.  For vegetables and annual flowers you can push a heavier fertilizer such as a 20-20-20 for best results.  Some plants such as morning glories will have an opposite effect if you fertilize them, and they will never flower.

So make sure what your particular plant's needs are.

  2. Mix the soil and the fertilizer you want to use for your plant to grow.
