How to put recorded shows from a DVR to my lapto?

I got a Scientific Atlanta 8300HD box and I'm wondering how to move recorded shows to my laptop. I've tried with a firewire cable but it says it needs a cd.

Can anyone help me?

  1. Go to Canada, and buy one with a DVD burner (was surprised to find them illegal in New York)
