Question:

How to quickly fix capitalization that is breaking website links?

I have built a 10 or so page website in Dreamweaver, and viewing the website on my local PC it works flawlessly. On the internet though alot of the links are broken. I believe this is because some of the .html files are capitalized, some are not, some links use capitalization, and some don't.

I have tried to just rename the files and links in Dreamweaver, but after doing that everything fell apart and all the links stopped working(worse then before). So I restored the page to an earlier version but I need to get this resolved ASAP.

Any suggestions on resolving this problem?

  1. The problem could possibly be that when you uploaded your files, maybe the links are showing as that on your PC, check your links in your browser, look at the source coding of a page or two.

In dreamweaver, if you change a capital letter or vice versa, then let dreamweaver update those links, you may have to look in your settings for this feature, it may not be turned on

  2. Keith:

You are building the site on a Windows machine, and Windows does not care about the case of letters (in other words, wheter they are capitals or not).  But you are probably publishing to a Linux-based web server, and Linux DOES care about the case of the letters (upper case versus lower case).

Go through and change all the links to lower case and rename the files locally to be lower case.  Then re-publish the site.

PS- why does the Chain Hoists link point to a musician's web site?

  3. Problem with fixing the links is you don't have to just fix the links.  You might also have to change the folder names etc.  When you have everything the way you want it, you might be better off deleting everything on the website and doing a fresh upload. That way you can see if you missed anything and you aren't pointing at old files/folders.

  4. Honey on the web hold your mouse over your links. i think you have some links pointing to the wrong places...

    Notes notes notes

Here's what i found is best.

Make a folder ok call it working web or whatever

In the folder put a complete copy of your web site.

the entire file structure right to the root, your default or index.

now only open the files out of that folder in DW as you are working.

In dream weaver open your index

    Highlight your first link.

In the lowest part of dreamweaver you should see a box, its kinda middle right.

Click on the folder icon on the right of that box/field. Go up (in the file structure) until you are sure you are in workingweb (the folder)

now navigate down until you see the page you are linking to. select it. now save.

on the design view right click and choose open linked page in dreamweaver.

Keep going down the links until you have done that whole branch. save all the time. control s.

    Keep notes as you go.

Now close all of those but the index and go down the next branch. make sure you are always linking withing your working copy folder.

When you are done up load all of the contents of the working web folder. not the folder itself but everything inside into the folder on the server that houses your site.

    test.

make notes on what is not working. fix those in your working copy and re up load.

I believe the key to a great website is the file structure.

Main folder (index, any css, All sub folder lvl 1s like (Images)(buttons)(subpage one) (sub page two)(forms)(FAQ) and so on. I like to keep the top level clean with only the index and related files to that page only out of subfolders.  It keeps it from getting confusing.
