Question:

How to quiet down freezers?

I work at a buisness that has about four large freezer and refrigerator units for meat and dairy. They are very loud and are annoying. I have been assigned the job of quieting them down. Any suggestions?

  1. Sometimes when things are loud, it is because the vibrations are being transmitted through to the floor, and then the floor becomes the resonant surface - like a speaker cone.

If you think that might be part of the problem, you can try to put the compressors on a foam or rubber  pad of some sort.

As your other respondent mentioned, the core is probably an inherently noisy compressor, and without replacing each of them, you will not be able to find the best solution, but you should be able to make a real difference without doing that.

And you may be able to use sound-proofing panels or baffles as long as you do not restrict the air flow to the compressors or coils. Sometimes, simply having a porous surface to absorb the sound as it bounces around inside a metal box can help: like the way one can damped a too-live room with a carpet or drapes.

  2. The noise is coming from the compressors.  The only thing to do is to replace the current compressor with a newer scroll compressor.  Do not try to sound proof! These units need air to keep them cool.
