Question:

How to "blend in" in Edinburgh?

Hi all! I'm staying in Edinburgh for a month this summer, and I really don't want to stand out as some pathetic American tourist. (I'm not trying to BE Scottish, just don't want to stick out as a dumb American ^_^ )

Any advice on:

What I should wear?

What I should avoid?

What's the general view on American students? Bad? Real bad?

Thanks so much!!! ^_^

  1. We always spot Americans as they wear white socks with trainers.  Wear international branded clothing and you will look exactly the same.  One difference (we have just come back from Scotland) is that you will probably be sober most of the time, but that is an asset you don't want to lose.

  2. Wear a tartan kilt and a football shirt from your home team...

Oh wait, you wanted to know how to not get killed. My bad.

DON'T WEAR TARTAN. That's my number 1 rule. And don't try to put on a Scottish accent. If anyone offers to deep fry anything for you, don't say no.

And don't smoke indoors (it's illegal).

Edinburgh uni has a lot of international students, including a lot of Americans. From my experience, most of Edinburgh Uni's students are English anyway.

My ex lives up there, as do a load of people from my college... I don't think a single one of his friendship group is Scottish. Perhaps he's a bit racist and I have never realised (nb- not actually true!)

  3. I was there in October and it is great! Very beautiful city and the people are generally very nice. I didn't feel any negativity toward being American, in fact, they were interested in learning about us. They tend to dress pretty nicely, I wished I'd brought nicer clothes but I was backpacking & hosteling it. There are some low income housing areas that you should avoid, I can't recall the names but you will be able to tell. The busses are a good way to get to know the area but downtown is easily walkable. If you have a chance go up to Loch Ness or Loch Lomand (sp?), very nice up there! (No I did not see Nessie.) And go to the castle, watch the 1:00 gun go off, it's worth going to. If I think of more I'll re-post! Have fun!

  4. If you're from the US you should blend in nicely as you are - the place is full of americans.

Other than that, try and look Japanese.
