im trying to quote a passage from a book using mla format how would i do this

for example: the passage is "hey" he said.

and i wanted to put that in my paper

would it appear like ""hey" he said."????

  1. Wait, I think I misunderstood: Okay, now I got it.

    It would appear as: "'Hey', he said."

    When using a quote within a quote, put the quote in singal quatation marks ('    ') and the entire thing in doubles ( "    " )

    i.e. "The boy ran and said, 'ow! that hurt.' as he fell." Don't forget to cite before the period:

    i.e. "The boy ran and said, 'ow! that hurt.' as he fell" (Brown, 8).


  2. The above answer is correct, but kill the comma between author and page number, as per MLA guidelines.
