Question:

How to re-handle a tomahawk?

I know the basic theory of how to re-handle an axe - basic shaping, wedge, diagonal steel wedge, soak in linseed oil etc.

But how is it done with a tomahawk? Especially with those made by Cold Steel which have a hole in the side of the axe head.

The handles for tomahawks I've seen look like a round tapered stick and no wedges seem to be used because of the small diameter of the handle.

So...what is the hole on the side for, and how to I rehandle one?

  1. All tomahawks I ever saw were just a simple taper like a pick  instead of double taper like axes and sledge hammers.

You just drop the tomahawk down the handle and bounce it upside down on something hard to seat it.

They were meant to be removable.

You take the handle out by bumping the butt end down on something hard.

Cold steel puts a hole in their shovels and axes so you can drive a s***w in there to make sure the handle does not fall back out.

Drill a pilot hole for the s***w.
