From kumbakonam you can directly go to Chidambaram and on the way you can get down at Vaitheswaran Koil.

Going to chennai from kumbakonam and then going to chidambaram is waste of time as chidambaram is on the way to chennai from kumbakonam

From Madras (now called Chennai), take an auto/taxi to Koyembedu Bus Stand---(State Mofusil Bus Terminus- SMBT) and there are buses that leave pracically every hour or so for Chidambaram --you'll get dropped right outside the temple.

Kumbakonam is on the bank of the Kaveri River, 68km southwest of Chidambaram and 311km south of Chennai. I'm pretty sure there are buses plying from Kumbakonam bus stand to Chidambaram as well ---you'll have to make local enquiries.

Renting a car from Kumbakonam to Chidambaram is also possible (also possible from Chennai).
