  1. The most popular way to bet on hockey is with money line bets. Money line bets are based on the favorite and underdog, giving odds that reflect the expected outcome of the game.

Favorites are represented with a negative (-) money line, while underdogs are generally represented with a positive (+) money line. In some cases, both teams are have negative money lines. This happens when two teams are very closely matched. When this happens, the team with the highest negative money line is the favorite.

    Money Line Example:

    - Montreal Canadians +135 (underdog)
    - Philadelphia Flyers -155 (favorite)

When reading lines, the away team is generally listed on top, and the home team is on the bottom. So, in this example, the Montreal Canadians are playing away, at Philadelphia. Being at home typically helps any team, so unless the team on the road is considerably better than the home team, the home team is often the favorite.

Money lines use the $100 figure, but negative and positive money lines work differently.
