Haven't received the award letter yet but went onto my colleges reg. site and it said i had a pell grant of $1400 and a CSN Grant of $1200(college of S. Nevada)Whats the next step? does the gov. automatically send to the college for payment so you dont have to worry about anything?how does it work?

also I heard if you take a couple of classes and there is still money left over from the grant, they cut you a check and the money is yours? is that true?

  1. i don't think you'll receive an award letter because i got a pell grant too, and i only found out when i look on my college email page. so i guess it'll be put in your account

  2. Ask the financial aid office at your school

  3. The Pell Grant (and theoretically the CSN Grant, too) will be paid directly to your school and credited to your student account.

You should still receive an aid offer letter from your school (though some schools simply post these letters on the student's online account), and you will need to "accept" the aid you were offered.

Once you have done that, all you have to do is sit back and get ready for school. Financial aid credited to your account is automatically used to pay down any money you owe for tuition and university fees. If there is money left over when all of your bills have been paid, the university will issue a check to you to refund the difference.  That money is yours to keep - and you're expected to use it to pay for other educational expenses, like books.

One more thing - your aid was granted to you on the basis that you would be a full-time student. If you don't register for at least 12 credit hours, your aid will be reduced. If you mean "a couple of classes" like 4 classes, you're okay. If you're really talking about only a class or two, you're not going to get all of the aid that you see there on the registration site.

I hope that helped - good luck in school!

  4. when I went to college in 1990, The money went straight to the college and I got a refund of any un used portion at the end of the year.

If they've changed it since then I don't know.

  5. The pell grant funds will be sent directly to your school to pay for your expenses, so you don't have to be the "middleman" in the transaction.

Grant money is used before student loans, so most of the time there isn't money left over, but......rare cases there are and yes you will receive the remaining grant money.

I found this information at http://PellGrantOnline.com  .  This site has a lot of information regarding the Federal Pell Grant.
