How to reclaim tax ??

Question

For the last 6 years i have been in full time work, but have been in different jobs. I have never claimed tax back on any of the jobs i have worked in, however i know that i should be due some money back as i have had wrong tax codes for some of these jobs and was paying to much tax. Is it possible for me to claim tax back even if it was 6 years ago, and if so how??

also being the most unorganised person ever, i don't have any P45 or P60 for these jobs i lost them during a house move. so what is the best thing to do?

If its quite a lot I'd go to an accountant - however the window for the older amounts to be reclaimed will have now closed!

You can make a claim going back 6 years - but why have you waited this long?

As you have no P45's or P60's, you need to write to your tax office (address available from your employer) and set out the names and addresses of all your employers over those 6 yrs, together with any periods of JSA claim.

If you don't have this info, then it will be very difficult to deal with your claim!

You can claim back any overpayment of tax for up to 6 years.

You have two options. You can use an agency to get the tax back for you. This can often be easier, especially as you mention, that you do not have your P45 or P60. an agency does charge a fee (around 10%) however if you do not know what you are doing, it can save you time and the effort with dealing with your tax office. If you do not want to use an agency, you can also claim back the tax yourself. To do this you need to:

Send all your P45/P60?statement of earnings to your local tax office, together with a P91, P85 and P86 completed fully.

Whichever option you choose you should act quickly as you could loose the 6th year tax reclaim as you time may run out to get thats years tax back.
