How to record one program while watching another?

Every time we try to record a program using our DVR it won't let us watch another channel without stopping the recording. When we have it set to record a series and we're watching a show when the one we want recorded begins it will tell us to switch to that channel or to stop the recording. Why can't we watch one channel while we record another?

You need a splitter.

Does it have two tuners?  Has to have two in order to watch another show.

Does the remote have a SWAP button and a PIP button?  Two tuner units do so you can swap to the other tuner or show both on the screen at the same time.

Are you already recording two shows at the same time or is one finishing while the other is starting?  If so a two tuner unit is already busy with both tuners.  In the case of the finishing and starting wait for the other show that is finishing to finish recording.

You might want to LIST the shows on the DVR and see what is recorded, what is recording and what shows are scheduled to record.
