How to record tv shows on my new VCR?

Well its actually for my mother... but I got her a new MVD4544 (Memorex DVD/VCR combo) from Target and hooked it up to her tv. It hooked up just fine and it plays DVD's and tapes just fine.

Darned if I can figure out how to record onto a tape though!

I followed the set up instructions, the cable goes from my wall to my tv, then I hooked up the SV Cable and audio into the correct jacks. Then I hooked up the regular video in and audio in and out into the back where the manual says.

I hit record and nothing happens. No tv show is recorded. I tried it on several different tapes.

The instructions just say to put a tape into the VCR and hit record, after setting the input to AV1 or AV2, I tried it on both AV's.

I am confused! Help!

I read somewhere else that I might need a cable box? Currently our cable just comes out of the wall and hooks in directly to the tv.

  1. You need to connect cables from the TV output to the input on your record deck.  Does your TV have audio and video output jacks?  If not, you need to connect the TV cable to the RF or ANT input on the VCR deck.  Then run another cable from the RF or ANT out back to your TV.  Select the channel you want to record and press record.  You need to have the TV on so you can see the VCR menu when you set things up.
