  1. I take all mine to a local Secondary school where they use the bits to make all sorts of things : )

  2. Sometimes local household hazardous waste depots take it, sometimes a city might have an e-waste depot, mine does.  Phone your local recycling center or city office and they should have some info on where you can take it.

  3. I wanted to get rid of 3 old computers/keyboards/moniters so I googled it and got a business in Bolingbrook, IL that takes everything for free (I think they do charge $10.00 per TV ).  The name of the place EScrap, Inc.

  4. Check with your waste managment department, they should be in the blue section of the phone book or your city may have a website. You can also check with office supply stores. In my area we have several drop off locations several times a month.

You can also check out www.earth911.org they can locate a drop off site by your zipcode.

  5. There are many options to reuse and recycle technological components and e-waste can actually be a source of raw materials if it is processed properly. For example, almost 95% of PC parts are reusable – from the disk drive and memory, to the gold and silver used in circuit boards. The lead from monitors can be harvested and copper can mined from wires and internal circuitry.

E-waste can be processed by dismantling and separating the waste into different parts – for example, metal frames, circuit boards, plastics etc are all separated. Alternatively, the material is shredded and separated into metal and plastic and sold to either smelters or plastics recyclers. This is however expensive and can be done by a few centres only.

What you can do? When you dispose your e-waste, check with the collecting auhtority what they do to it? Do they dismantle and resuse it, send it to landfill where it adds to toxicity on the planet or export it to developing countries where it does the same.
