To re stain or paint, I have a deck in which hasn't been done in about 5 years and is worn from use and would like to know if maybe it would be better to re stain or paint?

  1. You can buy a great little power washer for $79.00 at Lowes.Power wash it first then stain it. when the stain is dry apply a sealer.Buying bargain brands of stain and sealer will cost you more in the long run. Buy quality products the first time.It will last much longer.Good luck!

  2. Step 1.   Rent a power washer and go over every square inch of deck.  This will take off all loosened paint or stain.

Step 2.  Go over the deck with a paint scraper to remove any more stubborn loose paint.

Step 2.  Either restain or paint with an oil based paint meant for exterior flooring.  Depending upon the paint or stain that you use it may call for the use of a conditioner or primer prior to the final finish.

I just finished my deck about 2 hours ago.....lol.

  3. Depends on the condition of the wood.  If it's just dirty and a bit worn, stain looks much nicer..  Bad wood will do better with paint.

First, get some deck cleaner and scrub the whole thing well with a stiff brush.  Rinse and do it again.

Make sure it is really really dry when you stain. or the stain will not penetrate.  At least 24 hours after washing.

Left the stain dry for a few days, then seal.

  4. u sure its stain & not sealer? sealer [silicone] wont hold paint. paint will wear & peel anyway so stain it, i'd do the sealer

  5. Your first step is to carefully power wash the deck, railings etc., this is a must to get a good surface to work with.   Careful with the pressure that you don't tear up the wood.  Re-set any loose nails/screws and repair any damage. If there are any rotted, badly damaged boards, rails, etc., replace them.  Then restain and seal it with a good quality product.  Follow up is a light power washing each year and seal it with wood preservative.
