  1. REDUCE:  get a durable canteen, a bottle, or a container to use instead of plastic bottles.  Fill the one bottle from a tap over and over.    Filter it if you must.  Here is a link to a place where you can get individual water filters: http://www.purewater2go.com/bottles.html

By using the filter, you transport only the bottle and get water from what-ever source is available.  You also don't have water in the bottle a long time to leach out the chemicals that some people find worrisome.

REUSE:  You can use a purchased bottle with your filter over and over.  I also use plastic bottles with the top cut off to organize small items in the house.  One sits on the dryer to hold all the little toys my son has in his pockets, another for change, a third for contents of my husband's pockets.  I use a two liter bottle with the top cut off as my garbage pail to collect items that go out to the compost pile.  I use a two liter bottle with the top cut off and a bread wrapper liner for a trash can in the car.  I use the tops of the bottles for funnels.    I poked the neck of a bottle into the ground next to a plant that requires water, and when I pour the water into the funnel, it drains out slowly at the root of the plant, rather than spreading out and evaporating quickly.  I use empty water bottles as "hot water bottles" to apply to miscellaneous aches and pains.  If you have an old high-volume-water-use toilet, you can fill a water bottle and s***w the lid on tightly then leave it in the tank to reduce the amount of water each flush uses.  The lids can be used as "legs" under planters between the planter and the surface on which it sits if there is a drainage problem.  Just be sure to use enough "legs" to support the weight evenly.  I have my computer monitor sitting on a flat surge protector box.  I needed to add an inch or so in height to make the monitor a comfortable angle:  Four bottle cap "legs" worked perfectly, with the additional benefit of space to put a couple of files I'm working on under the box now.

RECYCLE:  Take the lid off and cut off the neck ring.  Rinse the bottle lightly so that it doesn't attract insects, and put it into the appropriate bin for pick up.

Edit for the poster who says that one can not reuse bottles if one reduces - nonsense.  We are conscientious about the purchase of the bottles, but we still seem to accumulate them.    Unless you deny your family all treats completely, never "forget" a drink when you are out of the house, Never have visitors who brought drinks for the family, or are extraordinarily tolerant of thirst when you are away from a water source, you will accumulate a few bottles.  Reducing and reusing isn't "propaganda."  It's common sense.

  2. Here is a link to a website that may be helpful to you.  It tells you about all different types of uses from a potpourri holder to a plant waterer.

  4. Where i live the recyle men will take a plastic milk bottle but not a plastic ice cream container OR a plastic butter tub! It's really stupid and i got so fed up with never knowing what they CHOOSE to take that i burn it all now and be done with it!

  5. Throw them in the recyleing bin... or bring them to bottle redemtion?

  6. we always re use our fruit shoot bottles, tend to use them for the kids lunch boxes, until they are very worn and then throw them into the blue recycling box. who says we need plastic cups for our kids, re use a pop bottle!

  7. you cant. if you reduce, then you wont have plastic bottles to begin with.

when you re-use it,you wont be able to recycle it at the same time.

to recycle, you will need lots of them, which wont happen if you had reduce thier usage in the first place.

it just some bs enviromentalist propagandas.

  8. One reuse of plastic bottles.  Fill them with water and place them in you freezer if it is not full. A full freezer uses less electricity than one empty or half full. Extra benifit. When the power goes off the things in you freezer will stay frozen longer if it is full.  You can also use the frozen bottles in you ice chest instead of buying ice and they dont get your food wet.

  9. Well, after using it, you can clean it, refill it, and use it again yourself. You can put it in the proper recycling bin - and if you workplace/city doesn't have that option, take the lead and get them started. I'm writing a letter to the editor of the St. Joseph, Mo., paper this morning about that topic. I have folk in my building recycling, and it goes to help a sheltered workshop make money. RECYCLE! Also, look around for a good non-plasitc bottle you can use over and over. Plastic IS oil, and it's a waste if not recyled. SPREAD THE WORD!
