How to refer to poor people in a nice way?

i'm writting a text about people with no money and conditions. what word can i use to refer to "poor people" but in a formal way?

    Really I would think being called poor is not the problem. As long as you are respectful in what you are writing about them.

  18. Have the PC police gotten to you?  When you say someone is poor, it isn't nice or not nice, it is simply a statement of fact.  Only opinions can be derogatory.  I wouldn't worry about it if I were you.

  19. People in the bottom X (choose your number) percentile of income is a clinical description.

    There is nothing terribly disturbing about using the term "poor" or "working poor" either, in my opinion, when used in a compassionate context.  Mother Teresa's life was about serving the poor, that doesn't mean she looked down on them.
