Question:

How to refinish a hardwood floor

We moved into a (potentially) beautiful Harlem brownstone last fall. Unfortunately, the last time the apartment was "renovated", the contractors were hired on the cheap. We consequently have a very nice hardwood floor that was waxed and sealed while dirty. Which means it has about ten years of dirt between the blanks and and least two weeks of human and cat hair sealed under the wax. Despite our good intentions, unfortunately, neither of us have any experience with stripping, refinishing, or waxing a hardwood floor. So, basically, how do two absolute beginners approach the stripping, cleaning, (possible) refinishing, and sealing/waxing of a hardwood floor?

  1. Rent a sander from your local home improvement store and sand the floor after you sand it you then put a coat of sealer then a coat of clear or finish on it Good Luck

  2. I can't say it all here but you can rent a floor sander-fairly easy to use but take care not to grind too deeply in any one place- and sand the whole floor down to a smooth even finish. There are more steps but this is how it begins-no big deal.
