How to refinish existing stairs with wood instead of carpet?

we yanked the carpet off the stairs and want to replace it with wood. What kind of skills do we need in order to accomplish this task

  1. sand and finish what you have unless they are ply wood then you can either use laminate flooring or natural hard wood either case its alot of work and you cunsult a flooring professional


  2. Basic carpentry skills will usually suffice.  It rather depends on how elaborate you wish to make the stairs.

    A simple approach would be to just add wood treads... you can purchase these at places like Lowe's, with no finish on them, so you can stain and topcoat them to match your home (or paint, but I figure, why buy wood treads only to paint them?)

    You didnt mention banister railings, so I assume you dont have them.  If you do, you can do one of two things.... remove them, to install the new treads, cut them down to match the new size, and reinstall them.... or... cut lots of little trim to fill in around them.
