How to relax before competition?

I often puke or feel sick about an hour or 2 before a competitive sport or game where something is at stake. I have high anxiety, and often try gravol, or alcohol to settle me down. After about 10 minutes into the game I feel fine and focused but that 10 minutes is crucial!

  1. You have to remind yourself of simple truths.  First, half the people at the table are going to lose.  Second, you will lose sometimes.  Third, sometimes you can't do anything about it.

It's alright to lose.  In fact, most people forget losing is what motivates you to improve.  Don't put too much pressure on yourself and remember it's just a game.  Go out there, have fun and enjoy the fact you're not sitting at your desk doing silly work.

  2. I usually use some nature videos or sounds to calm down.

http://relaxwithnature.com is quite nice and free.

The main thing is to forget all your problems for a couple of minutes. Just watch one of the vids, if this doesn't help, watch another one... and one more if you are still stressed.

Just before the competition try to remember all your feelings while watching the videos, and you will feel relaxed.
