  1. Well, I would first categorize the antibiotics in a broad manner, such as if they are derived from natural penicillin, synthetic penicillins, tetracyclines, sulfonamides, cephalosporins (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th generation), aminoglycoside, macrolides, monobactams, quinolones, carbapenems, carbacephem, polypeptides etc. etc. Then, after that I would find out which are most commonly used and/or sold in both hospital and retail. And from there, you could find out more information about each one until it becomes second nature and the knowledge is just swimming in your brain and there is no problem in recall and you could distinguish one from another and there is no more confusion. That's how I would do it. Either that or you could make those dredful index cards and have some fun flipping them over. (I wouldn't recommend it though). Everyone has a different way of learning, you would just have to find out what is better for you.

  2. Most of the antibiotics whose name's end with -cin belong to either the aminoglycoside or lincosamide classes. Each of these classes only has a few representatives. Maybe you should try learning a specific fact about the chemistry or administration of a specific drug and then associate that with the first part of the name.
