Question:

How to remove 42 yr old 1" bathroom floor tile?

I have started to remove 1x1 bathroom floor tile and am having a really hard time! I have tried a chisel bar with a huge hammer and a hammer and s***w driver. I eventually want to tile the floor, but this is at least a year away. SO, do I cover the spot that I was able to remove the tile and just put peel and stick vinyl flooring for a nice and easy temporary fix or do I try to get up the old tile? It is almost like the tile and cement are one. Please help me!!

  1. If the tile and cement are that well bonded, you're probably better off leaving the tile on.  Get some kind of a "skim coat" (ask an employee at Home Depot, Lowe's which to use) to fill in the mortar lines between the tiles, and apply your new flooring over the top of that.  No sense making more work of this than necessary.

  2. Yes they are pretty much 'one'. The mortar bed is usually 1-2 inches thick and was poured over a wire mesh and the tile was set into the wet mortar. Very hard to tear out, I usually use an old potato fork and just keep prying up the whole floor. It's allot of work and VERY dusty.
