How to remove Vista Basic from the Toshiba L30...

Have the Toshiba L30 notebook and came installed with Vista Basic which is taking up tooooooo much memory and making it very slow - about 18-mths old and always been slow. Only got McAfee off it a couple of months ago and replace with AVG but still very very slowwwwwww.Anyone got any ideas on how to remove Vista Basic (as have Windows XP Prof) and then is installation just a question of putting the disc in to install and run ...
