Question:

How to remove a bike crank arm?

So, I've recently asked a question about my bike's pedaling, turns out one of the crank arms were killed [forgot the correct term] the hole for the arm was all out of shape, became a circle. So now I'm wondering, where could I purchase 2 new crank arms? in Vancouver Canada, and could you give me a estimated price range? Also I have a few questions on how to remove the actual crank arm itself. Please go to the link provided. Thanks

I don't REALLY need to know how to remove the rings, but a possibly guide or simple 1-2-3 guidance to how to remove them would be nice. Thank you for your time.

  1. I'm assuming you have a square taper bottom bracket.

You need a crank puller. It sounds like you also might need a new bottom bracket. for that you'd need the appropriate tools. Either a Bottom bracket tool for a socket set, or a pin spanner and lockring tool, depending if you have a cartridge bottom bracket, or a cup and cone. to remove your pedals, you will need a pedal wrench. you can buy all these tools from a local bike shop, or MEC. It might be cheaper to let a bike shop do it, unless you think you'll use the tools again.

Cranksets start around $50 and up for an entry level mountain triple.

To remove chainrings: you need a hex key set and a chainring bolt extractor. you hold the extractor on the side of the bolt with the groove, then unscrew the other side with the hex key. Most new cranksets come with chainrings, so this is probably not needed.

I think Vancouver has a bike collective, try there thebikekitchen.com

  2. I can't possibly tell you what the parts will cost, but to remove the crank arm requires a puller that you can either purchase or rent. Once the arm is off, the screws holding the sprockets on to the arm will be exposed.

    Good luck
