How to remove a memory stick from your desktop?

i have a dell dimension desktop E310 and one of my memory sticks is not compatible with the new one i had installed and i did not install them and although the person who did tol me it would slow down my computer i didnt know it was goin to slow it down drastically so i was wondering if i simply just removed the stick out of the slot would i damage anything or is there more to it than that?

  1. Before you remove anything, turn off your computer.  It won't hurt anything if you remove the ram, just make sure you have at least one stick that is compatible left in.  I did a check on your computer and you need DDR2 PC2-4200, which is the only compatible type for it.  Here's the link below.

    EDIT: Whoops, as SJ pointed out, make sure all off the power is off.  Some people argue that it should be plugged into a power strip with the switch off so that it is grounded from static.  Also, make sure you constantly touch the metal chassis so that you release any built up static.


  2. nothing more than that. makes sure you are grounded and that you pull the tabs away so that the stick comes out easily.

  3. Not only turn your computer off but unplug the power cord to the power supply or turn the rocker switch on the power supply to off before you do it. Even turned off there is still power on the motherboard and playing around with ram while there's power on the board is a good way to damage the ram or board. Just open the 2 end clips and pull the stick out.
