Question:

How to remove debris from the inside of sealed steel tubing?

Hi, I recently got this top of the range (back in the day) 1960's lightweight frame. Only problem is that I can hear what sounds like a tiny, tiny piece of metal in both the top tube and left seatstay.

Because of who I am, I know this will annoy me when I finish the bike. I know what I'm like - I'll end up trying to hear this rattle when I ride over badly paved road, etc.

There are no holes where the tubes have joined the head tube and seat tube, so I have no idea how I can get these little bits out.

Do you?

Thanks

  1. There is no other way but to open one of it's end of the steel tubing or drill a 1/2" hole

you mentioned it's sealed this is your only 2 option

  2. I like the idea of the magnet. Simple and cost effective without being invasive. This would be akin to avoiding surgery. But if you have to get rid of the piece, take the frame to a builder. There is no way to get it out if the tube is actually sealed without drilling a hole. They would have to drill, extract the pieces, and the patch the holes (possibly welding the hole). Alternatively you could paint the edges of the holes with primer and paint and use JP Weigel's Frame Saver in the tubes. It's been the standard for years and years.

  3. This is a common thing with handbuilt frames... a piece of brass can sometimes be dislodged from the inside of the joint. A magnet won't do anything with a brazed frame and a welded frame doesn't have this issue.

There really isn't anything you can do about it, and you probably won't notice it as you are riding since you shouldn't be tumbling down the road too often.

  4. if you are positive that the frame is welded without holes, then make a circular hole at the bottom of the chasis/frame. make it small, where the frame is strongest

  5. Put a rare earth magnet on the tube so the tiny pieces will not move around.
