Question:

How to remove mold stain from leather without damaging it?

My fiance has a black distressed leather vest that he uses for motorcycle riding. He was caught in a rainstorm a few weeks ago while wearing it. The other day, he noticed that the vest had developed fuzzy white patches in some spots. The only thing we can think of as it being is mold; it smells similar to mildew. I scraped off the fuzziness and gently washed the spots with warm water. However, there are still white spots where the "fuzz" was. We can't figure out how to get those out.

Has anyone ever heard of mold on a leather item? How can this be removed without damaging the leather?

  1. Hi

Yes mold is quite common on leather.

It is important to kill the mold otherwise it will simply keep coming back and will eventually eat into the leather.

Theonly product I know that has been tested for use on leather and will actually kill the mold without any damage to the leather is Em Clean.

  2. that mold is a living organism and is eating away at the leather. So you need to destroy it,,,not try to hide it with shoe polish ( it will only eat the shoe polish too)

Suggest you soak the spots in mineral spirits.

  3. I suggest you try shoe polish.

A little bit on a soft colth and wipe the affected area.

Shoe polish will actually protect leather (making it repel water and more resistant to staining and mold) in much the same way it protects shoes.

Use plain shoe polish (i.e., no colour).

If you are unsure if it will stain your leather item, try a little bit on a non-visible area first (say, under the arm, for example) and wait a few houurs to see it it causes any staining.
