Question:

How to remove smell from sink?

My sink smells just fine until I turn on the water, and then a stench rises up from somewhere. I put a lemon in the grider in the left side of my sink already and it didn't help. I'm thinking that I may need to pour some type of cleanser down the right side of my sink, but I have no idea what to use!

  1. Dump a box of baking soda divided between both sides of your sink and then pour about a cup of white vinegar into each side.  It will foam up.  Allow that to sit for at least a couple of hours (don't run any water into the sink during this time) and then rinse well with hot water on both sides.  You have a build up of gunk in the sink pipes and drains and its rotting and causing the smell.  If this does not work, I would suggest going and getting one of those foaming pipe snakes made by Drano or Liquid Plumber and allow that to sit in the pipes for a couple hours.

  2. When my sink does this, I first try the lemon in the garbage disposal and if that doesn't work  pour straight bleach down both sides. Maybe a half cup down each side. Then run the water to get rid of the bleach smell.

  3. It could be your water!

  4. Plain old vinegar has worked wonders for me in the past! Give it a shot!

  5. It MIGHT be your water... How does it smell when you put it in a glass? Boil a pot for pasta?

In Arizona, if you live in the wrong area of the high desert, your water can stink like sulfur or have a reddish cast to it because of an iron eating yet harmless bacteria that lives in the water table...

In Tempe, AZ the water can have such high chemical levels that you are warned when you can and cannot boil water without having the windows open... And when you shower, your eyes can burn like you have soap in them.

Take a sample of your water to a local pool chemical store and see if they can test it for you.

If it is 100% not the water, pour a cup of baking soda down each side of the sink then pour a cup of vinegar down each side and let the foam do it's work for upwards of 15 min's then pour a HUGE amount of BOILING WATER down the drain to flush it all down. Run hot tap water down for an additional 5 min's to make sure it is all flushed.

The smell MIGHT be an accumulation of grease and whatever has stuck to the grease.

Also, run ice cubes in your disposal... alternate a slice of lemon and an ice cube and see if that helps.

I can't think of anything else to recommend. Good luck!
