  1. Users running Windows XP must disable System Restore to allow full scanning of infected computers.

Start computer in Safe Mode and scan with AVG

  2. If you suspect or confirm that your computer is infected with a computer virus. Download a free antivirus program and scan your computer then you should be able to remove it. Most popular free antivirus programs are AVG Anti-Virus, Avira AntiVir , Avast  etc. Check out http://blog.360.yahoo.com/blog-sAFtLsc8e... for more details.

  3. if you tried all of the anti-virus software and none of them can remove it. well you last and only hope is to re-do your computer. sorry but most virus are very hard to remove without re-install windows.

  4. Some viruses are sent to you in encrypted zip folders, with a GIF image containing the password to extract the payload - this prevents anti-virus programs from scanning inside and finding the virus. However, some anti-virus programs will report the I.P. address in the mail's header as unsafe, or simply alert you that the file is encrypted.

If you have hundreds of the zip files, the best bet is to delete them one by one manually, since like me, you have lots of useful files amongs all of the bad ones. I get lots of unusable files when I do data recovery stuff.

If you must reinstall your computer, some of the first things you'll need to put in:

    1) System Restore Engineer. Yes, it's Chinese-made, I abhor anything from that country, but this is one of the few that I like. It lets you investigate and manipulate the start-up process, Internet Explorer add-ons, Win-sock connections, and Windows Services Get it at http://www.kztechs.com

    2) Sandboxie. Great program for encapsulating those unknown files and programs you'll get in your e-mails so when you open them, the surprises are not permanent (it will block keyboard, mouse and system macros) Find it at http://www.sandboxie.com

    3) Kaspersky Anti-virus. It beats the competition, including my old favorites Panda Anti-virus and AVG. It has a more secure layer of protection, as well as a ccustomizableprotection layer that beats any software or hardware firewall on the market. With Kaspersky, I don't need to have Windows' firewall turned on. Heck, I don't even need to upgrade to Service Pack 2 on my computers except for the one that has programs that require SP2 to function. Get it at http://www.kaspersky.com

    4) Registry Workshop It's a registry editor, but the search as well as external file loading/saving capabilies in the program gives it a WIN. Perfect for WinXP-booting stick drives. You can scan for items linked to viruses which make them stubborn to remove, and zap them once and for all! Get it at http://www.torchsoft.com

Optional) Altap Salamander. This has a Total Commander-like interface giving you two lists of files to browse through. I like using it because: 1) It does not use any of the Explorer desktop.ini restriction settings. 2) It lets me see the files inside many archive formats readily. 3)It does not generate thumbs.db files everywhere - those things take up tons of space, and when you're building kiosk system, you don't want that eating up all the SD-Card space. (I use SD-cards in IDE adapters as hard drives) Try it out, it's a great investment. http://www.altap.cz/salam_en/index.html
