I just bought a new boat and removed the letters where the old name was so I can rename it. Now I have the sun faded outlines of the letters on the paint. How can I even this out so I can put the new letters on.

  1. get 3 m super duty rubbing compund    use that and follow with a color restorer from 3 m  also

  2. The old name will not go away completly with buffing.

If the area with the name really is painted, then you could prep & re paint.

Expect to get your new lettering the same size or larger than the old letters.

With a good buffing and new letters applied, the old name should be camoflaged in good enough.

Why rename a boat anyway? Might as well do it on Friday and make fruity banana drinks to celebrate the event.

  3. You might try a cutting compound like t-cut.  Be careful though you may end up doing the whole side/back as the problem lies in the paint under the letters being the 'real' colour and the rest is faded.

  4. I agree to use the 3M rubbing compound.  It may not completely do the job if the letters had been on for a long time.  You can use a 600 grit wet sand paper to help remove the worse of it then go back to the buffing compound.

You may be still be able to see the old letter outline of the letters but they will fade with time. Your boat will look great from 10 yards.
