  1. First, make a cut above the break to alleviate the weight.  Then, make a clean cut right along the trunk ("collar").   Make sure you leave the wrinkled plant tissue (bark) above and below the final cut so that it heals over quickly.

  2. Unlikely that much can be done if its broken at the collar.

Is it a clean break or has it splintered over a length of the branch from the collar?

If its reasonably clean at the collar then this may be the tree shedding a branch it doesn't require.

If its fractured to the collar along the branch there are a couple of issues you'll face trying to fix it.

I have seen such branches bound and bolted but... such wounds often end up having fungal problems as moisture is trapped in the wound as it heals. Also when bolted that process in itself can do even more harm to the tree.

So in short, if I was in this situation I would be either pruning the branch back to a clean stump (don't flush-cut to the trunk) or I'd be calling a registered aborist (tree care specialist) for advice.

  3. Cut away any fragments so it's clean, not frayed.

    Let it air-heal.
