Question:

How to repair tear in thin rubber?

I recently bought a russian gas mask to use as a photography prop for university but it was too small for me, and by wearing it I've split the back. The split is about 4 inches long, it is a clean split and no rubber has broken away.

Ideally Id like to use a method of repairing that would allow me to wear the gas mask for short periods of time without damaging it if possible, it's not necessary for it to actually work as a gas mask.

Ive looked on the internet but can't find anything, Im stumped! :[

Heres a picture of the split if it helps!

  1. Find a product called "Shoe Goo". It will stick to most anything.

Use a piece of cloth, thin canvas, or muslin and make a backing patch to go inside the mask. Coat the backing well and glue it on the inside while bringing the split together. If you can't find the "Shoe Goo" contact cement should work. You will want the patch to be about 1/2" or maybe1" wide. If too wide, it won't allow the rubber to stretch when you put it on.

  2. Puncture repair kit maybe?  Like those used to fix punctures in bicycle inner tubes and rubber dinghies etc.

  3. please go and buy "PVC gasket" should be able to get it on big DIY shop if not ask you mechanic to get one for you
