  1. Disconnect the battery before you start (negative first)

    REMOVAL

    1. Remove primary cover.

    2. Hold pinion gear in place and remove jackshaft bolt.

(The pinion and jackshaft bolt are at the upper right side of the primary case.)

(you might need to loosen the oil tank mounts to provide clearance for starter removal.)

    3. Remove rear exhaust pipe.

    4. Remove allen s***w end cover.

    5. Remove starter mounting alan head bolts and washers.

    6. Disconnect positive battery lead and solenoid wire from starter.

    7. Remove starter from right side of motorcycle.

    INSTALLATION

    Torque specs:

    Starter mounting bolts - 13 - 30 ft-lbs

    Jackshaft bolt - 7 - 9 ft-lbs

1: Install starter from right side of motorcycle.

(be sure jackshaft coupling engages starter shaft)

    2. Install positive battery cable and solenoid wire to solenoid.

    3. Install the two starter mounting bolts and washers. Tighten mounting bolts to 13 - 30 ft-lbs.

(be sure the lockplate protrusion is sticking into the keyway.)

    4. Install jackshaft lockplate and bolt. Hold pinion gear in place and tighten bolt to 7 - 9 ft-lbs

    5. Install primary cover.

    6. Fill primary chaincase with primary oil.

(You know how to do this right? fill it to the bottom of the clutch diaphragm spring (2.75 inches below the center line of the clutch adjusting s***w with the bike upright and level. Approximately 30 - 36 oz.)

    7. Install starter end cover and alan s***w.

(if you needed to loosen the oil tank mounts, retighten them now.)

    8. Install exhaust pipe.

    9. Connect battery cables.

This (and the pictures) is all in section 5 of the factory service manual which you REALLY should purchase if you plan to work on your own stuff.
