  1. Unless you are Corgi registered, it will be illegal for you to do this. There is more to this than just replacing the hob. You have to have the correct fittings and be able to test the gas installation for leaks etc.

    Edit

With respect Mark J, you must use a jointing compound for use with gas, and PTFE will not be acceptable unless it is the stuff for use with gas. Also you do not use washing up liquid and water to check for leaks, there are leak detection fluids that wont corrode any brass fittings etc.

The use of a proper manometer has to be used for testing.

Please dont risk it, get onto Corgi's web site and look for your nearest engineer, it will be well worth evey penny spent for peace of mind.

  2. its pretty simple

    turn off the gas

    undo the connection

undo the screws holding the hob to the worktop

    fit new hob

make good the connection.. use PTFE or other suitable jointing tape/compound.. your locla plumbers merchant should be able to help you

test the joint (if you wish) by spraying a mix of water and washing up liquid, then turn on the gas..... look for bubbles

turn off all gas appliances take not of the meter

ideally use a bubble meter/level.manometer to check the pressure holds in the pipe

If you value your safety.... get a CORGI plumber to do it.... its not going to cost a great deal and ultimately its your life at stake

  3. If you are in the UK, all connections to the gas supply must be made by a CORGI registered plumber.

  4. dont attempt it,get a corgi registered fitter, otherwise its illegal, also if anything goes wrong your household insurance WILL NOT cover you.

  5. Physically it probably wouldn't be difficult providing that you are competent with jointing; BUT it will be illegal and will definatley get you prosecuted if you're found out. Also, it will invalidate your house insurance so they won't pay out even if the claim is nothing to with your hob.

When you sell the house you'll have to include certificates for work done and the absence of a CORGI certificate for your hob will be noticed.

  6. If you're bent on doing this yourself, make sure you send the family out for the day and be sure to get in some fire extinguishers. Also, make sure you know a good glazier to replace the windows you'll probably blow out...Use your brain, get in a proffessional. Dont risk doing it yourself!

  7. all this talk about corgi fitters a guy i know had a boiler fitted by a so called corgi gas fitter, a few months later the gas board came to change his meter and wouldn't switch back on his supply because he had a gas leak , so he got another fitter to come and fix it, he found a hard to get at connection to the gas pipe leaking , so there you go don't always put your faith in anyone to do a job properly these days
