How to replace front oil seal in a ford 289 1965 mustang?

would like to know how to replace the front oil seal . Easy or hard ? any special tools?

It is a fairly tough job for the novice.   Get a repair manual and follow the steps.  A sbf from the sixties is one of the easiest engines to service.   All the accessaries on the front of the engine have to be removed.  The cooling system has to be drained, and the lower radiator hose, plus heater hose has to be removed.  The water pump has to come off.  The fuel pump has to be removed.  The harmonic baIancer has to be pulled.  It helps to loosen the oilpan before you remove the timing cover.   Clean the timing cover thoroughly before reassembly.  Make sure that the sealing surface on the balancer is not gouged or scratched. A good tip when you assemble the engine is to leave the timing cover loose and put the harmonic balancer back on the crank.  This ensures that the machined surface of the balancer is perfectly aligned within the seal.  Then you can snug up the timing cover bolts.  You can remove the balancer at this point and properly torque the bolts.

after removing the belts and pulleys I don't remove the water pump and I brace a breaker bar on the frame with a 15/16 socket on the crankshaft bolt and then use the starter to loosen it  get the puller to remove the damper then take the timing chain cover to get to the seal reverse to reassemble about 3-4 hours and only a puller for special tools

Remove belts, remove crankshaft pulley, remove harmonic balancer bolt, install balancer puller and carefully remove balancer, remove old c-shaft seal using seal puller or equiv.

Clean timing cover thoroughly, install new seal USING SEAL INSTALLER! Clean and inspect balancer. If you find a groove worn into the outside from where the seal has contacted the balancer then you will have to repl. it or the oil leak will still be there. A number of stock repl. and aftermarket balancers are available for the Ford smallblocks. Be sure to utilize threadlock when re-installing the balancer bolt and torque it to specs.(www.alldatadiy.com).

The repair manual says you have to pull the timing chain cover because it goes in from the back side..  you will be able to tell when you get the pulley off.  It's best to get a manual, all the parts store have them..
