How to replace my dogs crate with his bed??

My labrador puppy is 5 months old, he is amazingly enough not so bad chewing now and is well behaved, im sure it will all change ina few months but hey.....my question is.....he has a big crate in the kitchen where he goes when im out/at bedtime but he always wee's in it, does not matter what i do, wether he has just been or i put newspaper down in one part which i have tried a few times, he still wee's in bed, so every day my kitchen smells of wee, his crate needs mopping out and his bedding needs washing + he is a smelly doggy.

He has a dog bed in front room which he never urinates on/in and im hoping to rid of the crate and use the dog bed and put paper down on kitchen floor instead.

What are your thoughts on this? a good idea or not? any other suggestions are welcome.....thankyou

  1. I as so glad to hear of someone who wants to get rid of a crate.  I, myself, do not like them & will never use one unless I am transporting a dog.  The idea of locking a dog away for hours just isn't right.  I know lots of people like & use them but I just can't see the justice in it.

My dogs have their beds & not crates.

    EDIT:

You can use the bottom half of the crate as his bed.  The transition will be easy.

  2. if you change the crate for the bed the dog with recognise that this is not the crate and therefore will not wee on the bed so it does sound like a good idea. You could always put newspaper all over the crate so no matter where he wees it will be soaked up. What is ridiculous is that you are washing his bedding everyday

  3. Hi there.  In my opinion, you should take your dog to crate training.  it will help your dog prevent from peeing or pooping anywhere.  This would also help you eliminate the smells of wee in your kitchen.  Another thing is, crate training helps your dog learn a good habit.  For more tips on crate training, just check out this site:

  4. The cage/crate should only be big enough for the dog to stand and turn around in, otherwise they will go to the bathroom in it if there is room enough to walk all over inside.

  5. your lab now recognises that the crate is his kennel, he will generally go into there as he wants a bit of time to himself.  Usually when a dg is crate trained he doesnt uninate in there as its his home, Keep on trying with him and it will pay off

  6. Umm, tough one. I know you say you have tried everything, but have you considered putting his bed in the crate, & getting another for the front room (or vice-versa)? If this isn't possible do as you have already said & go from there. It is quite unusual though for a dog to continue to pee in his crate. I got by this with my dog by, telling him off sternly every time I saw him doing it, & placing him immediately outside on his own for 10 minutes. If I didn't witness him doing it, I didn't confuse the issue by telling him off. When he did it in the garden, he was rewarded with a very enthusiastic "good boy" & a small treat. Good luck, & if it doesn't work out, come back & we'll mull it over again!

  7. the likely hood is that he's weeing on it to leave his scent on it.I think that if you got rid of the crate, he might start doing it in his bed, So what i'd do is store the bed away, and then get rid of the crate for an hour at a time, when you think hes most likely to want to go. Then put it back.Gradually increase the time you get rid of the crate with, until he stops weeing and then give him back his bed. That way hes more likely to get out of the habit

  8. Labs are so smart... he will be *fixed* in about a week. What I would try... Before bed time... lets say you are in the bed about 9pm. at about 6 or 7 pm NO MORE WATER. not even a l**k! right before bed... about 825 he needs to be outside... running playing... chasing... whatever he needs to do. he needs to potty so that you can see him., You need to be out there watching him so you know he is going. (if you can be out there about 45 min this is good... but more time is better of course) once he is inside the house... put him to his crate. this might sound mean, but take out the covers in his bed... All he needs in there is a Kong toy (MAYBE) you dont have to give him anything. As for the kitchen floor... you can put puppy pads around his crate so that when or if he pees, it will be on the puppy pads and not the floor. Also you can clean it up by simply cleaning up the pads. Humans have the same thing and they are not scented... I dont know if he will smell the pads and think that he is posed to pee in his bed. I would try to locate something other then the puppy pads. Maybe a blanket? I know i would rather wash a blanket every 2 days then clean the floor daily.! I would not shout at my dog. i dont think they learn anything that way!  As far as his bed in the living room. He should keep that one there. he likes it and is not messing it up, i would leave it there if i was you.

    I hope this helps!
