Question:

How to replace power steering on '98 cherokee sport?

I have a '98 Jeep Cherokee sport, with a failing power steering pump. It recently started to make a sort of grinding noise, in addition to a horrible whining noise. All fluid levels are right, and the mechanics looked at it twice to conclude it was just a noisy pump. I am going to replace it my self, and want to know some tips and possibly a step by step guide. ( i do already have the Haynes Manuel, which gives a brief, but decent description of the process). Thanks,

  1. First place a drain pan under the pump...second remove the lines on the back of the pump...one should be a rubber hose and clamp setup (it will be very difficult to pull the hose off after you remove the clamp)  the other should be a line fitting which is basically an steel line with a nut around it that holds the line in the pump a 16mm nut i believe...Third remove the 3 13 or 15mm bolts on the front of the pump and wiggle the pump out...Fourth you need to remove the pulley on the pump (if your new one does not have one) this requires a special tool...autozone will probably rent you one...then you have to install the pulley on the new pump again it will require a special tool see autozone again...finally reverse the removal procedure...make sure that you see how far the pulley is pressed on the old pump and install it to the same depth when you put it on the new pump...Good Luck
