let's say my opponent hits a crosscourt shot from the ad court, what's the mechanics behind hitting an open stance forehand down the line? my hits always return crosscourt back to my opponent.

  1. line yourself up right for it... fully extend

  2. Line your shoulders up with the point you want to put the ball. (Then hit the ball!) I dont think an open stance works too well with this shot unless you're really really good.

  3. Okay, let's assume both of you are right handers, and they return a shot crosscourt from the ad court  that would be to your backhand.  You run around it and now can go either inside out back to their backhand crosscourt, or down the line to their forehand.  Note that this shot, when hit from your forehand corner would be a forehand to forehand crosscourt, but due to your court position is a forehand to forehand down the line.  (Correct?)  The main thing is your body alignment.  If your body is aligned right, the shot is pretty easy to hit.  But the other thing is that you are typically inside the court a way to hit this one, so you have to be careful not to overhit.   So, it's it's a big deal to get a smooth, long contact on the stroke to guide it into the corner.

  4. it would be harder to do on the ad side because if you don't hit it well enough your opponent can hit it past you. if you are going to hit that shot you can't hold back. when you are on the deuce side you have a better chance of getting the ball back if your opponent gets to it. hope that makes sense.
