How to rid pergola of yellow sticky sap?

I bought a house last summer which has a pergola in the backyard. So I am not sure what wood it is made of and it is painted white. I have noticed a yellow sticky sap seeping out of the knots in the wood. I am looking for advice on how to get rid of the sap and keep it from coming back. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Scrape it off, wipe it down with turps, seal with shellac and repaint.
