My friends convinced me to try out and I made JV but I have no idea how to rotate. I know you have to rotate clockwise but when, and then theres this other weird thing when you have to go to these random places after the serve?

  1. you rotate every time your team gets the serve after the other team has served. example: if the other team is serving, and they miss, your team gets the ball, this is when you rotate one position. my high school JV does this thing where when the other team serves, the front row player attack from the position closest to them (the person at left front always hits an outside set when the other team is serving until they put the ball over, then they play their normal positions). your team may be doing this, so pay attention to where you are on the court. you may (like our varsity) go directly to the position you are playing, so you would get ready to hit. it can  be confusing, but stick with it.

The above website has great diagrams for you to use in learning 6-2 or 5-1 rotation patterns. If you need me to help explain them I can try to give more individualized help over e-mail.

And the places you move to are not really random. They are tailored to the position you play whether it is setter, outside, or middle. It is a very systematic set up, because it gets you to the spot you are best at.

  3. ah, i had the same problem as you did just a month ago, email elpeheighton@yahoo.com and i can send you the 5-1 rotations

ps. my friend convinced me to tryout and i ended up making jv too, lol! what a coincedence.

if you email me, and i send it to you, it will help you learn the rotations, also ask your coach during practice about where to rotate too, i did that also and it helped a lot!

  4. It's not really random.  You must have your positions assigned by your coach.  You get one position in front row and one position in back row.

Front row positions are outside hitter(left front), middle blocker/hitter(middle front), and opposite(right front).

Back row positions are left back, middle back, and right back.  By the rule, you have to stay in your rotation until the serve but after the serve, you go to your position.

Just ask your coach what your position is.
