Hi! Ive been riding with the same instructor for three years and I would like to switch to a different instructor because Ive seen no improvement. The problem is, that they work at the same barn and I want to avoid a clash and I don;t want to hurt her feelings. Have you had any experience with this? What did you do? What do you suggest?

  1. Tell her that you had fun and that shes very nice but you havnt seen any improvement and are switching to someone else and that its not personal at all.

  2. You are paying for instruction.  Its your money and you have a right to get what you need for it.

An instructor that may try to make your feel guilty doesn't deserve your concern.  If your instructor wants the best for you then she will appreciate your honesty.  simply tell her you don't feel like your are improving and want to take lessons from the other instructor.  Maybe she will make it easier for you to go to the other trainer or maybe she will send you to someone she thinks is better for you.

I always believe honesty and simple noncofrontational discussion is best.

    Good luck.

  3. I totally agree with David, no need to burn bridges or cause issues that are not necessary.  Tell your present instructor that you appreciate all that she has contributed to your development and that you would like to experience another approach that might be used by other instructors.  Don't act like it's a big secret who you are going to hire and don't apologize for what you are doing.  Who knows, you may just reach a point that you want to return to this same instructor one day.  You might even consider getting her a little gift that would hold some special meaning between she and you.

  4. i would tell her that you don't want to hurt her feeling but you haven't seen any improvement in my  riding and I am glad that you have helped me this far but I am going to have to let you go sorry. that is what i would say. One thing to rember is one instructor can take you so far until they don't know any more to teach you. that is when you get a new instructor.

  5. i had the same problem last week only i wouldbe on another competative team i e mailed her and said that i needed a change for a while buti kept it posotive and try to keepit from sounding insulting it worked out fine urs will to.

  6. I wouldn't tell her that there has been no improvement. Just say you've been with her for a long time and you want to try other approaches. It is reasonable to get instruction from multiple people anyway, I would advise you to broaden your horizons. I took lessons from multiple trainers. If your instructor is a reasonable person she will understand this.

You might soften the blow by occasionally riding with her as you start to work with the new instructor, and just let her fade away.

  7. Riding instructors know that clients come and clients go, so I doubt you will hurt her feelings by moving on. Remember that you are a paying customer with no obligation to stay with her if you are not satisfied with the service you are receiving.

You don't have to have a clash, you can just explain that you don't feel like you are progressing the way that you would like. As a result, you'd like to try some lessons with ______ to see if she is a better fit as an instructor for you.
