How to search for a train in indian railway stations?

i just booked a ticket using the IRCTC website. As i have never travelled in train before, i need to know what are the procedures at the railway station and how to locate my train and the seat/compartment in it.

please help as i need this information as soon as possible... i usually travel by bus so i am totally unaware of the formalities involved while travelling in train

If your seat is confirmed then you can directly go to the station on the journey day and see on the chart of your train indicated by the train name and number-- for example- Udyan express-No-6429. And in that chart you search for your name in the list. Your seat no. and coach no. will be displayed on that.

    To check, whether your seat is confirmed or not, the easiest way is to SMS your PNR-No of  your ticket to 139 and you will get the present status.

    Another method is to visit the station and there is a PNR machine (computerized), you have to just enter your PNR no in it and it will give you your present status.
