  1. i saw this on Man v.s Wild, he pointed the hour hand directly at the sun, then he noticed where the 12 o'clock hand was and exactly 1/2 between the 12 and the hour hand was south.

  2. Point your watch's hour hand at the sun. South is halfway between the hour hand and the '12' position on the watch. Don't forget that if you're on daylight time or summer time, you need to subtract one hour. So if your watch says 3 p.m., you should point the '2' towards the sun.

  3. The idea is that the sun bears true south at noon. The problem is ... what is noon? Your watch shows the local time which can be quite different from the local hour angle; the time of the meridian passage, then the sun is highest in the sky.

Let me give you an example: I live in Oslo, Norway, which is at about ten degrees east of longitude. Furthermore, we are presently on the summer light saving time which is Greenwich mean time plus two.

Ten degrees of longitude is 40 minutes of time (24 hours divided by 360 times 10).  It means that, for me, the sun is highest when my watch shows 1:20 PM.

Adjusting your watch to your Greenwich Hour Angle, you can then find directions remembering that there are 24 hours in a day and that your dial is divided in 12 hours. You must then multiply by two. E.g. six hours before noon, is where the 9 number would be: true east.

  4. At midday, the sun is directly to south. Turn around so that the 12 on your watch points towards the sun, and you can use the dial as a compass.

  5. Draw a circle in the sun and put a stick in the middle of the circle. You can see the shadows worked out the angles in the mornings, noons and afternoons. It believes that the ancient Chinese created the compass as per the magnatitude of the travelling of the sun.

The Chinese compass has 5 directions---- North, South, East, West and Middle.
