While more than 800 MF schemes exist in the market, it is pretty difficult to choose the ones which may suit you through DIY process.  It is better to seek professional help. There are several companies which may provide this service and you can explore them.  Below I have given few links which you can check-out.

As you listen to various sales pitches, see that the following rules are strictly followed at the end.

1. Whether the asset allocation for you (to satisfy your risk capacity) has been identified and the product addresses this requirement.

2. Define the time-frame when you need the funds back and choose a product which perfectly fits this time-frame.

3. If the product is new (less than 3 yrs for equity, less than 2 yrs for hybrid and less than 1 yr for others) straight away ignore these. There are several products in the market which have gone through the ups and downs. Stick with these instead of the new ones.

4. Spread your funds across 2 or 3 MF companies and not more.  This kind of diversification is enough.

5. Spread your investments across less than 8 funds.  Anything more than that you will have problem in tracking the funds.

6. Never do a lump-sum and always go for SIP investments.

7. The important thing in investment is how long you are in the market and not how you time the market. No one can time the market.
